This cash-only “stand” claims to have the “Best Char Dogs and Fried Shrimp in Chicago,” but that’s not all Fat Phil is doing right. The char burger here is nearing perfection. Phil’s Last Stand is the brainchild of the guys that brought you Lockdown Bar & Grill, who have teamed with legendary hot dog man Chicago Fat Phil to open a classic char grill in Ukrainian Village.
The burger (aka, the “Fatso”), like most char burgers, has a less-is-more quality that places it firmly in the minority of its contemporaries around town while at the same time earning it high praises by this site and other Chicago critics. The Fatso and Double Fatso are modest-sized and will look somewhat familiar to the rabid In-N-Out fans, but for our money are un-toucahble by fast food wannabes that just can’t compete with the real flames cooking these patties. Grilled onions, melted American cheese, crispy iceberg lettuce and “Fatso Sauce” all play subtle but important supporting roles to the perfectly-charred centerpiece.
The fries are fresh-cut and double fried and come highly recommended.
If you’re incredibly hungry and insane, try the Fatso’s Challenge.
